Parenthood is a challenging responsibility but a pleasing one. Nevertheless, parents highly-neglect one aspect that is their“well-being”. Parents are the most precious gifts from God, who sacrifice their needs and wishes for the happiness of their children. Time has changed a lot, we now see children being much considerate and thoughtful of parents’ physical and psychological needs but back in the twentieth century, there was no such awareness neither in parents nor in children. Now, parents are also giving importance to their well-being. They have realized the fact that they can only pass morality to their kids when they are rectitude. There are many overlooked factors on which parenthood depends. Some of the factors affecting parenthood, (a way to better upbringing) will be discussed here.
Parenthood is a reframing process. Economically speaking, children’s adulthood and parents’ late ages are the fruitful and beneficial years. Scientists have also evaluated that the well-being of parents is sound and good in adult ages of their children. The implications of parents’ well-being are not only seen in children but also on building a fortified society. There are many factors affecting parenthood, which are a way to better upbringing, some factors are as follows:
WHO has defined Quality of life as “ the insight of an individual on his position in society based on their culture and value systems corresponding to their concerns, standards, goals and expectations.”
One of the factors affecting parenthood is “Economic status”, it is the main factor which can directly affect mental as well as physical health of parents. Which will have in return effect on children. According to researchers, it has been proven that parents in developed countries have more stable economic status as well as a psychological one, thus provide their children with a good quality of life. Whereas in developing countries, the well-being of economic status along with psychological well-being is not that much sound. In the case of wrecked economic status neither the parents can afford any liability nor can provide good mental health. It has been observed that most of the people cannot compose their emotions thus show a violent behaviour towards household in case of any economic calamity. As a result, they pass their violent behaviour to the children. In economic status, there are many components: family income, education, occupation. It is not necessary that the economic status of every other family is sound but it depends on how it is dealt with. Unfortunately, due to a lack of general awareness on mental health and the absence of quality upbringing of parents themselves, parents fail to cast such sound mental improvisation on their children. In conclusion, economic status is directly proportional to the well-being of parents.
While speaking of well-being, educational background of parents is really important which is the most impactful among all factors affecting parenthood. Education gives you exposure to multiple experiences. Through education, parents can guide children to success. A research was done in which different families belonging to different educational backgrounds and socioeconomic statuses were surveyed. It was proven that well-educated parents provided their kids with a better quality of life physically and mentally. Here it is mandatory to mention this thing that “Educated Mothers” have a significant effect on a child’s upbringing. Only an educated mother can teach a child to distinguish good from the bad. In developed countries, the literacy rate in women is quite high but in developing countries, the literacy rate is below 20%. This depicts how the well-being of new generations is at stake. If parents are well educated on every matter, they can guide their child better. They are well-aware about all needs of children. Thus, education is a factor which affects the well-being of parents.
Culture and social structure of a society is a key factor which plays a vital role in any matter. Culture crafts the thinking processes, goals and concerns of an individual. One of the factors affecting parenthood is ” Cultural constraints“, which usually alters a child’s upbringing. Culture has fixed social roles which cannot be violated. This can be sometimes much destructive. Sometimes parents want to implement something righteous on their child but it is against their culture. For example, a parent wants some social norm of the developed world to be implemented in the developing world or vice versa. Due to the social structure of his society, he cannot do so. This can prove as the main hindrance in the well-being of a child. This can also harm a child’s mental health. Every culture is beautiful but is not necessary that all constraints or norms in a particular culture are righteous. So, parenting needs to be subjective, choose what is good for your child rather than going with the flow.
The most important and impactful among all factors affecting parenthood is “Awareness”. If the above-mentioned factors are present in a parent then a general lack of awareness can lead to negative implications. There is a slight demarcation between being educated and being well-aware. Individuals should be given proper awareness and training before marriages. They should mutually decide whether they are mentally prepared for producing their progeny. If yes, then they should see, do they have awareness for the upbringing of a child? Thus, basic awareness is needed for righteous upbringing.
“I came to parenting the way most of us do — knowing nothing and trying to learn everything.”
In conclusion, parenthood is a challenging responsibility, which needs to be handled while taking every other consideration into account. So, best of luck parents!
